ASU Mid-South bats come alive against Highland College

By any measure, the ASU Mid-South baseball team came up big over the weekend. The Greyhounds won three of their four games against Highland, including a rally in Game 1 and a slugfest in Sunday's finale.

Game 1: Greyhounds comeback downs Highland Despite trailing by as many as four runs, ASU Mid-South rallied to defeat Highland 6-5 on Saturday. ASU Mid-South didn't take the lead until later in the game. The game was tied at five in the bottom of the sixth when Kaleb Tejada singled, scoring one run.

A sacrifice fly by Luis Quintero put Highland on the board in the top of the first.

Eli Dale doubled to center field, which helped ASU Mid-South tie the game at one in the bottom of the first. A single by Ezekiel Alcala gave Highland the lead, 2-1, in the top of the second. Matthew Dutton singled to center field, which helped ASU Mid-South tie the game at five in the bottom of the fifth. Brock McNeill started on the bump for ASU Mid-South.

The starter surrendered five hits and five runs (four earned) over four and twothirds innings, striking out six and walking five. Christopher Suarez led things off on the bump for Highland. The starting pitcher gave up eight hits and five runs over five innings, striking out five and walking none. Kayden Perrilloux pitched one and twothirds innings of zero-run ball for ASU Mid-South in relief.

The pitcher allowed zero hits, striking out two and walking one.

ASU Mid-South piled up 10 hits in the game. James Chicorelli led ASU Mid-South with two runs batted in from the number nine spot in the lineup. The center fielder went 2-for-3 on the day. Ethan Hirons and Chicorelli each collected two hits for ASU Mid-South.

Quintero provided pop in the middle of the lineup, and led Highland with three runs batted in. The number three hitter went 2-for-2 on the day. Quintero and Alcala each collected two hits for Highland. Highland had patience at the plate, amassing seven walks for the game. Emanuel Lantigua, Oscar Soto, and Felixander Severino led the team with two bases on balls each.

Game 2: Yarborough's big game gives Greyhounds the win

Darrian Yarborough drove in four runs on three hits to lead ASU Mid-South past Highland 9-0 on Saturday. Yarborough singled in the fifth scoring two, singled in the third scoring one, and singled in the sixth scoring one.

ASU Mid-South were the first to get on the board in the second when James Chicorelli drew a walk, scoring one run.

ASU Mid-South added to their early lead in the bottom of the third inning after Drew Busby doubled, Yarborough singled to the left side of the infield, and Cohen Jorgensen doubled, each scoring one run.

Bronson McNeill earned the win for ASU Mid-South. The lefty surrendered four hits and zero runs over seven innings, striking out five and walking two. Steven Trinidad took the loss for Highland. The starter went two innings, allowing one run on one hit, striking out none and walking four.

Game 3: Big First Inning Leads Highland Past ASU Mid-South

The Cougars scored seven runs in the first inning, which helped them defeat ASU Mid-South 13-3 on Sunday. Highland got on the board in the top of the first inning after Joel Peguero singled, scoring one run, Feliz doubled, scoring two runs, Junior Valdez doubled, scoring one run, Ezekiel Alcala singled, scoring one run, and Emanuel Lantigua grounded out, scoring two runs.

The Cougars added to their early lead in the top of the second inning when Valdez singled, scoring one run, Alcala tripled, scoring two runs, and Jhemmal Geraldo hit a sacrifice fly, scoring one run.

Anferni Guzman earned the win for Highland. The righthanded pitcher surrendered three hits and one run over three innings, striking out two and walking one. Scott Trumble pitched three innings in relief for ASU MidSouth. The right-handed pitcher allowed three hits and two runs while, striking out two and walking three. Layne Rivers took the loss for ASU Mid-South. The pitcher went two innings, giving up 11 runs (10 earned) on eight hits, striking out none and walking three. Kaleb Tejada and Darrian Yarborough each collected two hits for ASU Mid-South. Brayden McKnight and Cohen Jorgensen each drove in one run for ASU Mid-South.

Highland accumulated 11 hits in the game. Valdez went 4for-4 at the plate and led the team with four runs batted in.

Feliz and Alcala each collected multiple hits for Highland. The Cougars turned one double play in the game.

Game 4: Hits aplenty in Greyhounds' finale with Highland

There were runs aplenty on Sunday, as ASU Mid-South beat Highland 12-9. ASU Mid-South collected 14 hits, while Highland had 11.

The game was back-and-forth, but a double in the sixth inning helped ASU Mid-South take the lead for good. Highland got on the board in the first inning after Feliz singled, scoring one run. ASU Mid-South jumped into the lead in the bottom of the first when Ethan Hirons singled, scoring one run, and Drew Busby doubled, scoring two runs.

Highland captured the lead, 53, in the top of the fifth when Ezekiel Alcala doubled, scoring one run, and Joel Peguero singled, scoring two runs.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, ASU Mid-South went back into the lead after Kaleb Tejada doubled to center field, Eli Dale doubled to center field, Hirons doubled to right field, and Busby hit a sacrifice fly, each scoring one run.

Highland made the score 9-7 in the top of the sixth after Felixander Severino singled, scoring one run, Luis Quintero doubled, scoring one run, and Oscar Soto singled, scoring two runs. ASU Mid-South flipped the game on its head in the bottom of the sixth, scoring five runs on five hits to take the lead, 12-9. The biggest blow in the inning was a double by Matthew Dutton on an 0-2 count that drove in two.

Ashton Smith earned the win for ASU Mid-South. The righty allowed three hits and three runs over one inning, striking out none and walking two. Ethan Sanders pitched three innings in relief for ASU Mid-South. The reliever allowed four hits and one run (zero earned) while, striking out three and walking none.

Cameron Macdonald took the loss for Highland. The pitcher went one inning, allowing five runs on five hits, striking out none and walking one.

Dainan Burrows led things off on the mound for ASU Mid-South. The right-handed pitcher gave up one hit and one run (zero earned) over one inning, striking out none and walking one. Isaiah McElyea stepped on the mound first for Highland. The starter surrendered five hits and three runs over four innings, striking out four and walking none. Kayden Perrilloux collected the save. ASU Mid-South collected 14 hits in the game. Hirons and Tejada each collected three hits for ASU Mid-South.

Busby led ASU Mid-South with four runs batted in. The left-handed hitter went 2-for-3 on the day. Dale and Parker Andel each collected multiple hits for ASU Mid-South. Tejada stole two bases. Highland amassed 11 hits in the game.

Soto and Peguero were tough to handle back-to-back in the lineup, as each drove in two runs for Highland. Quintero led Highland with three hits in three at bats. Jhemmal Geraldo collected two hits for Highland in three at bats.
