November 1st means opening day for the NJCAA basketball season, in which our Greyhounds were hosting their annual Greyhound Tip-Off Classic featuring Region 2 opponent and defending National Champions National Park College, as well as Jones College and Northwest Mississippi.
The Greyhounds would host the #9 team in NJCAA D1 Preseason Rankings in Jones College on opening night, and the Bobcats proved a point from the opening tip off defeating the host team 85-39. “They are an incredibly good team. They brought back multiple players from last season who played a big role in them going to Hutch last year, and added more depth and scoring around them. Hats off to coach Mealer and his staff over there, they came in and just put it to us from the opening tip. I got severely out coached, and I didn’t make the proper adjustments needed to give us a chance to slow them down or get ourselves going. We will learn from it and be better, but we can’t dwell on it too long. We turn around in less than 24 hours to play a good Northwest Mississippi team.” Greyhounds head coach Cody Hastings had to say after the game.
Jones would lead the entire game taking a 36-18 lead into halftime after a steal and dunk in the last couple seconds of the half. The Bobcats would pick up right where they left off in the second half, as they would outscore the Greyhounds 49-21 in the 2nd half. Jones would shoot just under 50 percent from the field in the game, while the Greyhounds struggled to see the ball go in the hoop as they would only shoot 25 percent from the field, and 11.5 percent from 3. Jones would also take advantage outscoring the Greyhounds 44 points in the paint to just 18 for ASU Mid-South.
