Third graders at Marion Math, Science & Technology Magnet took a bite out of science on Thursday as they participated in an exciting hands-on learning project – dissecting dogfish sharks.

Assisted by students from Marion High School and parent volunteers and, the younger students explored shark anatomy up close, applying scientific principles they’ve been learning throughout the year.

As they examined the internal organs of the sharks, students made real-world connections to their lessons on marine biology. The dissection allowed them to better understand how sharks function as predators in the ocean ecosystem.

The project didn’t stop at dissection. In their Reading class, students have been diving deep into the book “Shark Attack,” which provided them with background knowledge about sharks’ behavior and ecosystems. The combination of literature and hands-on science helped students connect different subjects and make learning come alive.

Teachers noted the valuable mentorship provided by the high school students, who guided the younger learners through the dissection process and shared their own knowledge. The collaborative project is part of Marion’s commitment to integrating STEM learning across all grade levels.

This engaging experience brought science to life for the third graders, sparking curiosity and excitement about the natural world.
