With severe weather moving in the community, Marion students have been stepping up to help local residents stay safe.
Starting Tuesday, in conjunction with the Crittenden County Emergency Management and the City of Marion, the Marion Football team gathered to fill sandbags to help residents who may need them ahead of the incoming weather.
According to Bud Spears, director of the Office of Emergency Management, residents living in low-lying or flood prone areas anywhere in Crittenden County are encouraged to pick up sandbags to protect their homes.
Even with hundreds of sandbags filled and distributed at the Marion Sports Complex, the heavy lifting didn’t phase the MHS football players. In fact, they saw it as a win-win situation for them.
“This means a lot because football games we need the community to come out,” said MHS Junior Jeremy Dent.
“To be able to give back to the city that we’re from its something we want to do. We need to be able to help people to be able to grow.”
The team worked together to shovel sand, fill bags, and carry the sand-filled bags to a huge pile where Crittenden County residents can come pick them up, on a first-come, first-served basis.
Spears added that residents are urged to stay updated on weather conditions and take necessary precautions.
