A West Memphis priest has been suspended inde_nitely after being charged with aggravated animal cruelty, leaving his parish and the broader community in shock.

Father Charles Thessing, 63, who served as the priest at St. Michael Church, was arrested last Tuesday after an investigation revealed evidence that he had trapped and drowned cats on his property. Authorities discovered two dead cats in a tank of water, as well as animal traps at his home.

The Diocese of Little Rock responded swiftly, with Bishop Anthony B. Taylor announcing Thessing’s immediate suspension in a letter to parishioners Wednesday.

“Having heard from numerous voices within the parish, the school, and the broader community; having consulted with others; and having given this matter much prayer and consideration, I have determined that Fr. Thessing cannot continue serving as an effective pastor for your parishes,” wrote Bishop Taylor.

Following the announcement, Bishop Taylor confrmed that he will be traveling to West Memphis this weekend to lead Mass and offer guidance to the affected parishioners writing, “I plan to celebrate the Masses for you this weekend in West Memphis and Crawfordsville. I look forward to being present with and accompanying you during this difficult time. And I am actively working on plans for the future leadership of both of your parishes.”

The investigation into Thessing began after a concerned citizen alerted authorities. West Memphis Animal Services, alongside the West Memphis Police Department, acted quickly to obtain a search warrant, leading to the discovery of the alleged abuse.

Records indicate that Thessing has bonded out of jail, but his whereabouts remain uncertain. Since his arrest, his home has been vandalized, with windows smashed and reports circulating that he has fled West Memphis due to threats against his life.

Thessing’s arrest has left the West Memphis Catholic community deeply shaken, with many feeling betrayed, hurt, and struggling to rebuild their trust in the church leadership. The Diocese has not yet announced who will permanently take over Thessing’s duties, but Bishop Taylor’s visit aims to provide stability and reassurance as the parish processes the troubling allegations.
