The Arkansas State University Mid-South Greyhounds went 1-1 last week, winning at home but losing on the road as they vie for a spot atop the Region 2 leaderboard.
Greyhounds Defense Too Much for Colts
ASU Mid-South hosted UA Cossatot on Monday to finish the first half of region play. A win for ASU Mid-South would keep them in at least a 3 way tie for 1st, while the visiting Colts try to get a big statement win on the road.
'I'm proud of our guys. This was our 4th game in 7 days, and 3rd game in 5 days including an overtime game at National Park Thursday. I know these guys are tired, and I'm just thankful for them to just keep giving us everything they have. We didn't shoot the ball well from the outside

tonight, but we were able to be efficient from the free throw line and in the paint.
One of the things I'm most proud of is the way we play defense at times. It really makes it hard for the other teams to get into their offense, but we have to be more consistent about that. We have too many lapses, so if we can correct that we'll keep taking the proper steps forward. This is why we schedule a tough non-conference schedule to get us battle tested for this time of the year. We started 37 and these guys have worked their butts off to get us 8-3 from then. We're going to get right back to work tomorrow, because ASU Newport is waiting for us on Thursday and that's a going to be a big game. Nothing beats a rivalry in sports.' head coach Cody Hastings said after the 78-65 win over UA Cossatot.
The game started out going back and forth, but once the Greyhounds took a 12-11 lead with just under 12 minutes remaining in the first half ASU Mid-South would never trail again. The Greyhounds would end up taking a 39-25 lead into the half after an impressive put back dunk by CJ Washington. The Colts would continue to scratch and claw their way back into the game, and would cut the lead to 4 with 6:27 remaining in the 2nd half. ASU Mid-South would continue to gain control of the game as they would lean on their free throws and defense to separate themselves from UA Cossatot, and would push their lead up to 17 before taking a 78-65 win.
Grant Jessen would lead the Colts with 20 points and 14 rebounds, 8 of which were offensive. Tyler Woods rounded up the double digit scorers with 12. Alan Jordan scored 9 and Ryan Clemons with 8.
4 Greyhounds scored in double figures with Santana Spivey (14) leading the way.
Darren Wallace continues his great play scoring 13, CJ Washington with 12, and Jermaine Christopher with 10.
Taylor Conner and Davonta Tucker both scored 8.
With the win, the Greyhounds will remain at least in a 3 way tie as the first half of region play comes to an end. ASU Mid-South hits to road to Newport, Arkansas as they take on the Aviators of ASU Newport. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:30.
Greyhounds Get Beat in Flat Finish
Rivalry games always mean more when certain teams get together. That was the case Thursday night as the Greyhounds of ASU Mid-South traveled to Newport, Arkansas to take on the Aviators of ASU Newport. These two teams first met in December where the Greyhounds won 86-64, but the Aviators had different plans this time around.
'This is what happens when you don't show up to play every night in our region. Any team can beat any team on any giving night. That's exactly what happened tonight. We thought we could just show up and win, and that was not the case at all. Credit to coach Nutt and his guys cause they came out and took it from us. We got up 7 kind of early, and they closed the half out strong and then came out even stronger to start the half. I thought our guys did good of battling back and cutting the lead to 5, but we couldn't execute down the stretch to get any closer. We weren't focused, missed way too many layups and free throws as well as defensive rotations and rebounds.
Again, credit to their guys for getting after our butt tonight.' head coach Cody Hastings had to say after the game.
You could tell how much this game meant for both teams at the beginning as they were getting after it from the opening jump. The Greyhounds were finally able to take control for just a little bit as they pushed their lead to 7 in the first half before the Aviators came storming back. During that time, the Aviators switched up their defense to allow them to slow the Greyhounds down, and executed almost perfectly down at the offensive end getting what seemed like whatever they wanted. Eventually, ASU Newport would take 35-29 lead heading into the half.
The 2nd half wasn't much different, as ASU Newport would push their lead well into double digits before the Greyhounds needed to regroup. ASU Mid-South would battle back with big efforts from off the bench from Darren Wallace and Hayden Drumwright giving the Greyhounds a chance by cutting the lead to 5. It was the Aviators who always seemed to have an answer as they would come right back down to the other side of the floor and stretch the lead. In the end, the Aviators held off the Greyhounds attempt at a comeback earning a 74-68 win. Their first ever victory over ASU Mid-South.
ASU Newport was led by Justin Gill's 23 points followed by Greg Fowlds 22 points. Nehemiah Reedus finished with 14.
