As I wake up to the news that police officers have once again been killed merely because of their occupation, I get a familiar sick feeling in my stomach. I am swamped with feelings of confusion and frustration; I don't understand how police officers, the men and women who leave their families everyday to protect yours, are being persecuted.
Have you ever lain awake at 2:00 A.M. because your husband just got called out to a scene where a man is holding his girlfriend hostage? Or had to leave in the middle of a date night that you looked forward to all week? Explained to your children that plans had to be changed because “Daddy has to go back to work”? I have. This is part of being a police family, and it is accepted as the norm. What is not acceptable is the hatred that officers are currently experiencing.
Let's be forthright and admit that police officers are not all perfect. They do make mistakes, and few of them are not good people; just as not all teachers, doctors, lawyers, etc. are good people. However, the officers I know will put their lives on the line for each other, their community, and people that don't even like them. If you hate someone based on his or her profession, without looking below the surface of his or her badge, isn't that its own form of bigotry?
So, as my husband leaves the safety of our home to protect the safety of yours, I will continue to say a prayer for his physical safety and mental serenity during this incredibly difficult time for police officers. And I will remain unabashedly proud to be a cop's wife. If you join me in this sentiment and are proud to be a cop's wife, husband, parent, aunt, uncle, or friend, please let them know in this stressful time that you are supporting them.
