Hey Evening Times in regards to an article on front page of the evening times Monday July 25th headlines (Earle council wants answers about missing court money) I need the record to be crystal clear about an ex-court clerk. I am Gwen Steele and I am not the court clerk (who name seems to remain anonymous) this is for those who may not know. My last day was January 12th. I served for 31 years and I am not the one. This allegedly happened in April according to the article in the news paper. As for my name remaining on an account – well you had my insurance cancel the same day you should have wipe everything away. I was informed this was discussed in council meeting. Don’t try to direct anything toward me – I passed 31 State Audits. Keeping it real – Gwen Steele. I shorten it and took lot of attitude out. [ Editor’s Note: I’ll be completely honest and say that judging from the way things are going out in Earle, they might think you still work there. Anyway, keep on “ Keeping it real, Gwen Steele!” You should get that put on a Tshirt]
*** Why wasn’t Hubert Bass arrested for disorderly conduct with his ranting and name calling? Every time things don’t go his way he throws a childish fit and storms out of a meeting. This white race hating man needs to be kicked off this Quorum Court and tar and feathered out of this county. If the N word is offensive to Blacks, they why aren’t the Black Quorum Courts filing a complaint against Bass for calling them the N word. I know white people get hammered for using it. Bass only wants this ban on the box because he is a convicted felon himself, he got it expunged but it still happened that he was arrested for Carrying a firearm on school property. The box needs to stay but I don’t see a problem with hiring a felon as long as he paid his dues and it wasn’t a violent offense. [ Editor’s Note: Just working my way down your text… That is a great question. I’m guessing everyone was probably just glad he left. While I don’t condone the idea of tarring and feathering, there’s a much easier way to get him off the quorum court — someone could run against him. I don’t think he’s ever faced an opponent at election time. Regardless of his politics, and whether “ ban the box” is a good idea or a bad idea, his behavior is an embarrasment. If you really want to know what he thinks, check out his Facebook page]
*** First of all I would like to say I am open to the ban the box, buy why would you hire someone before you did a background check? That is just crazy. I would also like to make a comment about the inappropriate comments made by Mr. Bass. I can not believe he is not asked to step down. Just what district does he represent? I can not believe that district continues to vote in someone that speaks like that unless they fell that way. No wonder this community does not grow. [ Editor’s Note: We actually had a discussion as to whether or not to print Mr. Bass’ quote uncensored, and decided to do so as a way to convey what his true feelings are. But as I mentioned already, he runs unopposed, so unless someone in his district steps up to say, “ No, he does not represent us,” expect more of the same. As far as “ ban the box” goes, I’m all for giving someone with a felony conviction an opportunity to have gainful employment, but I don’t think you can just adopt a blanket “ don’t ask” policy for all potential county employees]
*** Dang! If the mayor of Turrell makes $2000 a month I’m fixing to move there and run for it. How could such a tiny place pay such a huge salary? [ Editor’s Note: We did the math…
with a population of 615 ( 2010 census), $ 2,000, which amounts to $ 24,000 per year, comes to about $ 4 a month frome every man, woman and child in the town. I won’t argue whether or not that particular job should pay that much, but those are the numbers]
