Garden Club
The Hughes Town and Country Garden Club (HTCGC) met on July 15, at Pancho’s Restaurant in West Memphis. This month’s hostesses were Holly Bacon and Virginia Carpenter. This month’s Yard of the Month went to Susan Spurlock and Bob Huddleston on Southwood Cove. There was discussion on this year’s Arkansas Federation Garden Club’s Midyear Board meeting, Aug. 1-2, in Searcy. Teresa Shannon will attend both days and Melinda Akins and Holly Bacon will attend, Tuesday, Aug. 2. This month’s program was on Conservation. The HTCGC wish to express their thanks to Debbie at the National Resources Conservation office in Marion, for providing helpful and useful information sheets. Door prizes of Kalanchaloe plants went to: Melinda Akins and Nan Lambert. Black Olive Ornamental Peppers went to: Janey Carpenter and Teresa Shannon.

New Arrival
Congratulations to Vince and Deanna McDermott of Horseshoe Lake, for the arrival of their newest granddaughter, Scarlet McKenzie Hattaway. Scarlet was born on July 19, at 7:15 p.m., weighing 5 pounds and 15 ounces and was 19 inches long. Her parents are Cody Hattaway and Rachel Whaley of West Monroe, Louisiana. Scarlet has a 5-yearold sister, Callie Naron.
*** Youth Garden The Horseshoe Lake Youth Group which is sponsored by The Hughes Town and Country Garden Club is working on something different this year. They are not focusing on vegetables this year, however, there was a volunteer tomato plant and some herbs that came back from last year. Melinda Akins on their first meeting planted flowers and made labels for the plants. The next meeting Melinda Akins and Holly Bacon helped the youth weed, mulch and water the plants and gave a briefing on how the tags would have to be written for entries. Teresa Shannon added a new category for youth’s at this years Flower Show, at the Fair in Forrest City, in August. At this time they are meeting every other Wednesday at the Horseshoe Lake Library at 10 a.m., next meeting is scheduled for July 27.
