West Memphis senior beats injury
WM School District Summer Abram's senior year of basketball came to a crashing halt in the early stages of the 2015-16 season, but it'll all end up well for the lefty-shooting point guard.
Abram signed a basketball scholarship for ASU-Mid-South Community College and head coach Sonja Tate last week.
Abram looked very impressive in her first game in uniform for the Lady Devils last season during a preseason game against Little Rock Hall.
But in the team's second game of the season she tore her ACL and was ruled out for the season.
It was a crushing blow for head coach Shelia Burns' squad, which was counting on Abram to provide speed, ball-handling and deft three-point shooting.
'Summer would have been a huge difference for us this year because she started so strong,' said Burns. 'She was such a morale booster for the other seniors. We recovered from the news of her injury early, but in the long haul it just cost us a lot.'
Abram said she was excited to play for Tate, the former Lady Devil great who is a West Memphis Sports Hall of Famer as well as an Arkansas Sports Hall of Famer.
'She's a great coach with a lot of knowledge about basketball,' Abram said of Tate.
Abram admits the injury was tough to take.
'At first I didn't deal with it very well,' Abram said.
'People still had my back, though.'
Abram has a wide range of interests and talents. In the Academies of West Memphis charter with ASU-Mid-South she will earn her certification as a trained airline mechanic soon.
However, she said she wants to major in psychology and become a psychologist in the future.
