Amesha Brown signs with Philander Smith
Lady Devils hoop star to continue playing career
West Memphis School District West Memphis senior basketball standout Amesha Brown signed on to play four more years with Philander Smith College on Tuesday at her home.
Surrounded by family, friends, Philander Smith gear and a beautiful orange basketball cake, Brown made the decision official.
She said she wanted to play ball close enough to home so her family could see her play.
'It was important for me to have my family come see me,' said Brown, a twoyear starter and three-year letter winner for head coach Shelia Burns' Lady Devils. 'Philander is close enough for them to support me.'
Philander will get a rugged player who is unafraid to dole out punishment to the opposition. Brown said the Philander coaches told her she will play center.
'They also said I had a chance to start right away,' Brown added.
When asked if that was also one of the major selling points of the college, she smiled and said, 'It was a definite selling point.'
Brown said she received interest from other schools such as ASU-Mid-South and Crowley's Ridge.
'I think Philander was my best option,' Brown added.
