Pastner accepts Georgia Tech job

National search upcoming

UM Media Relations MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis athletics department announced today that head men’s basketball coach Josh Pastner has accepted a similar position at Georgia Tech.

'Josh Pastner has represented the University well during his time as a Tiger.

We wish Coach Pastner the very best as he leaves the University of Memphis to continue his career at Georgia Tech,' said University of Memphis President M. David Rudd.

“I want to congratulate Coach Pastner and wish him and his family continued success in his new role at Georgia Tech,” said Director of Athletics Tom Bowen. “Coach Pastner guided our program with integrity, high academic standards, and a commitment to the Memphis community.”

A national search for Pastner’s replacement will begin immediately.

Memphis will engage the same search advisory committee and follow the same protocols and procedures that were utilized in the hiring of Coach Mike Norvell this past December. As was done in that process, there will be no public comment until the search is complete and the ideal candidate has been hired to lead the program forward.

“Memphis basketball is a historically-renowned program, with a strong national legacy, and we expect to attract a national candidate pool,” said Bowen. “We will be efficient, but diligent in finding the right leader for this program.”

“I have personally met with the student-athletes and staff to ensure that during this interim period, the student-athletes are diligent in their responsibilities in the classroom and basketball skill-development.”

Pastner served as the head men’s basketball coach from 2009-16, and amassed a 167-73 record.

During his tenure, Memphis won five conference championships (three tournament and two regular- season), participated in four NCAA Tournaments, and made one NIT appearance.
