ASU Mid-South presents Black History Month program featuring Little Rock Nine speaker
Elizabeth Eckford to address gathering Feb. 27
www.asumidsouth.edu Arkansas State University Mid-South caps off a month-long celebration of Black History Month with a guest appearance from Elizabeth Eckford, one of the Little Rock Nine students who were the first African-American students to ever attend classes at Little Rock Central High School in 1957.
Ms. Eckford, who was 15 at the time, was the first member of the Little Rock Nine to face an enraged mob of segregationists while attempting to desegregate LRCHS. The integration attempt came after the Supreme Court Brown v. Board of Education decision of 1954 was implemented. She and the eight other African American students endured verbal, physical and mental attacks while attending Little Rock Central High School, but remained enrolled for the year despite incidents of violence toward them.
Ms. Eckford will speak of her experiences as a young person during the Civil Rights Movement. The public is invited to attend the presentation on Wednesday, February 27, at 11:30 a.m. in the Donald W. Reynolds Center Rotunda on the ASU Mid-South campus.
