The Busy Bustle of Fall Has Arrived
The Busy Bustle of Fall Has Arrived
If I’ve heard it once, I’ve heard it a thousand times…
“There’s just nothing to do around here.”
Well, for those of you with that notion in your heads, just get it right on out of there.
One need only to have picked up a copy of the good ol’ Evening Times recently to see there were many, many activities on the calendar. Too many, almost!
Now sure, there are times of the year when might not be a whole lot going on during a particular week here or there, but the community calendar is quite full these days. Trust me, after running all over town on a recent Saturday, camera in hand, trying to get a few pictures for the paper, I can attest to the fact that Crittenden County is a hap’nin’ spot.
For the early risers, we had the March of Dimes March for Healthy Babies walk-athon going off, right about the same time Mark Rose and his crew were getting youngsters signed in for the annual Kids Fishing Rodeo.
Not long after that, there was football afoot, that of the little league variety, going off at multiple sites. If none of that was to your liking, just about then would have been a good time to head over to the Marion United Methodist Church’s annual fall festival, the Hullabaloo, featuring games and rides and a petting zoo and such, as well as an auction, food, face-painting and more.
Across town, DeltaARTS was gearing up for another cool musical, with auditions for their fall production, “Aladdin Jr.” with more than a hundred kids on hand to flash their talents for the casting party. And then back down the road, the Marion First Baptist Girls in Action were, indeed, in action, with the annual GA’s Daddy/Daughter Car Wash fundraiser.
And that was all going on before noon!
The point I’m making here is this: There’s always “something to do” around here.
Whether it’s something family- oriented like the recent “Movie on Broadway” showing of “The Goonies” or the West Memphis vs. Marion football game this past Friday night, or something upcoming like the Hometown Crawfordsville Festival or the John Anderson concert at the new Marion Performing Arts Center or the Sunday Singing Series at Trinity in the Fields or the return of the “Runnin’ Dogs & Cookin’ Cats” funfest this Saturday at ASU Mid-South.
You don’t even have to cross the river to get in on all of these events. And this is only a partial list. The Evening Times runs a list daily of upcoming events. The Chamber of Commerce publishes a community calendar chock full of fun-filled affairs online and on Facebook.
There’s a lot going on, and with fall in the air, that calendar is only going to fill up more, with Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas on the way — yes, it’s almost October, so the non-stop holiday months are just around the corner! Only a dozen shopping weekends until Christmas!
You know — Christmas Parades and Tree-lighting festivities and school parties and all the community holiday open houses (guaranteed to cause me to gain an extra five pounds, but hey, I need to provide “extensive coverage” for the paper, right?) and more.
You’re liable to get completely worn out trying to do it all, especially if you’ve got kids to drag along with you for all the fun. But don’t worry! Mark your calendars for Saturday night, November 5th. That’s when we get to “fall back” at the end of Daylight Saving Time.
Hey, it might only be one extra hour of sleep, but I’ll take it!
