Blue Imps too much for Golden Lions
WM School District West Junior High's formula for success is as old as the game of football itself.
On Thursday night at Hamilton-Shultz Field, the Blue Imps played off its stout defense and then relied on a three-yardsand- a-cloud-of-dust offensive formula to piece together a 26-6 victory over Wonder.
The now 4-0 Blue Imps got two touchdowns from Davion Eason and some heady play from quarterback Owens McConnell.
'Our defense plays outstanding week after week,' said West head coach Lucas Morris.
'Fundamentally, our defense is absolutely sound.'
The West offense put its defense in a hole on the first play of the game when McConnell saw a snap zoom over his head, giving Wonder possession at the Blue Imp 28.
After four plays, however, the Golden Lions (1-3) netted only five yards and the ball was handed back to West.
This time McConnell and company patiently matriculated downfield for a score as the West QB bulled his way into the end zone from a yard out with 6:37 left in the second quarter for a 6-0 Blue Imp lead that lasted until halftime.
In the third quarter, Eason scored the first of his two TDs when he raced 31 yards for the score and then tacked on the twopoint conversion for a 14-0 score.
'Davion got into the weight room and worked really hard last spring and then came up to me and told me he wanted to play running back,' Morris explained. 'I told him we'd give him a shot. It's been a pretty good move for us.'
The Imp defense gave its offense a short field to work with in the fourth quarter when it held Wonder at its own 32. It turned into a 2-yard touchdown by Eason with 5:45 left.
West's final touchdown came on a 16-yard run by Napolean Chism with 47 seconds left to play.
Wonder got on the scoreboard on the final play of the game on a touchdown pass from Cedric Loving to Steve Spencer.
