Locals show off green thumbs in ‘ Nothing But the Best’ showcase

hbacond7@aol.com The Hughes Town and Country Garden Club (HTCGC) presented “Nothing But the Best” A Small Standard Flower Show, that was held Aug. 31 through Sept. 4. The HTCGC is a member of Arkansas Federation of Garden Clubs, Inc, The Northeast District, The South Central Region and National Garden Clubs Inc. It was at the Wiley T. Jones Fairgrounds in Forrest City. This year’s theme was Frank Sinatra. Section A: “Cracklin Rose”-Class 1Hybrid Tea 1st place-Wilma Powell (Red), 2nd place-Wilma Powell (Pink) 3rd place -Wilma Powell (Yellow). Class 4-Miniatures 1st place- Leigh Moore. Class 6 -Shrubs (Knock-Out) 1st place Paige Laws, 2nd place Della Peterson, 3rd place – Ann Mansel, 4th place Holly Bacon. Section B “Ain’t Cha Ever Comin Back” – Class 7 Celosia, feathered (Plumosa) – 1st place-Melinda Akins, 2nd place – Leigh Moore, 3rd place -Wilma Powell. Class 8 -Celosia, Crested (Crisata) 1st place-Melinda Akins, 2nd place -Rita Johnson. Class 9 – Tagetes, Marigold – 4th place Teresa Shannon. Class 10 Lantana- 1st place-Holly Bacon, 2nd place – Janey Carpenter, 3rd place – Kathy Davenport, 4th place- M.T. Hall. Class 11-Vinca Periwinkle – 1st place- Jeanette Cumbia, 2ndplace – Janie Carpenter, 3rd place Sherry Dodd, 4th place Ann Mansel. Class 12- Zinnia Small 2” or under – 1st place -Delma Murray, 2nd place – Holly Bacon, 3rd place -Leigh Moore. Class 13 – Zinnia Medium 2 ? to 4” – 1st place – M.T. Hall (Yellow), 2nd place – Ann Mansel, 3rd place – M.T. Hall (Purple), 4th place Delma Murray. Class 14 Any other specimen worthy of exhibit. 1st place & Award of Merit -Melinda Akins (Begonia), 2nd place – Rita Johnson (Torenia), 3rd place – Rita Johnson (Browallia), 4th place – Rita Johnson (Lavendar). Section C “I’ll Wait for You” Biennials, Perennials cut specimen. Class 16- 1st place -Hazel Mitchell-Gorman, 2nd place – Sandra Moore, 3rd place – Teresa Shannon. Class 17 – 2nd place – Teresa Shannon, 3rd – Rita Johnson. Class 18 – 4th place – Teresa Shannon. Class 21 – Any other specimen worthy of exhibit. 1st place & Award of Merit Ann Mansel (Dianlha), 2nd place – Rita Johnson, 3rd place -Ann Mansel (Hydranda), 4th place – Janie Carpenter (Stella de Ora). Section D: “When the Wind Was Green” Garden Grown Cut Foliage, Herbs, Ornamental Leaves and Grassess cut specimen with one stem, leaf or branch. Class 22 Aspidistra (one Leaf) – 1st place – Teresa Shannon, 2nd place – Sherry Dodd. Class 23 – Caladium (one leaf) 1st place – Paige Laws, 2nd place – Delma Murray, 3rd place – Rita Johnson, 4th place – Dot Gores. Class 24 – Coleus x hybridus (one branch) 1st place – Dot Gores, 2nd place -Paige Laws, 3rd place – Kathy Davenport, 4th place Dot Gores. Section E – “It’s a Wonderful World” Container- Grown Foliage Plants – Bloom insignificant, if present. Containers may not exceed 14”. Class may be subdivided into pot sizes 7” or under or 8’-14”. Class 32 – Chinese evergreen – 2nd place Ann Mansel. Class 34 Asparagus Meyeri 1st place Kathy Davenport. Class 35 Emerald Feather – 1st place – Melinda Akins. Class 37 Bromelaid – 1st place & Grower’s Choice Award Holly Bacon. Class 38 Ferns – 1st place – Janis Leake, 2nd place – D. Perkins, 3rd place – Ann Mansel. Class 40 – Coleus 1st place – Melinda Akins (Frog’s Foot), 2nd place Melinda Akins (Green Coleus). Class 41 – Any other specimen worthy of exhibit. 1st place – Kathy Davenport, 2nd place Melinda Akins, 3rd place Holly Bacon, 4th place S. Moore. Section F – “Pretty Colors” – Container-Grown Foliage Plants – Must be in bloom to exhibit. Containers may not exceed 14:. Class may be subdivided into pot sizes 7” or under or 8-14”. Class 42 – Begonia 4th place – Rita Johnson. Class 44 – African Violet-1st place & Growers Choice Award – Marilyn Zaleska. Section G “The Hurt Doesn’t Go Away” – Container Grown Cacti and Succulents – One plant per container except where self-multiplying. Containers may not exceed 20”. Class may be subdivided into pot sizes 7” or under or 8-20”. Class 48 – Any other specimen worthy of exhibit. 1st place & Growers Choice Award -Holly Bacon (Cactaceae), 2nd place Rita Johnson, 3rd place – Ann Mansel. Section H – “I’ve Got the World on a String” Container Grown Climbing and Vining Plants. Containers may not exceed 20”. Class may be subdivided into pot sizes 7” or under *20”. Class 50 Philodendron Scansens, all green foliage. 1st place – Sherry Dodd. Class 51 – Devil’s Ivy- 1st place – Anita Davenport, 2nd place S. Moore, 3rd place Melinda Akins. Section I “Evergreen” Combination Plantings. Must have been growing together and in exhibitors possession for at least six weeks prior to exhibiting. Each of the plants must be identified with botanical names on 3×5 cards. Class 52 -Dish Garden . A miniature landscape in an open container. May include one or more accessories, to enhance plantings and to create an effective landscape such as rocks, pathways, driftwood, figurines, etc. 1st place Teresa Shannon, 2nd place – Hazel Mitchell, 3rd place – Holly Bacon. Class 54 Planter- A group of plants grown in an indoor or outdoor container. Not a landscape. Accessories not permitted. 1st place – Teresa Shannon. Section J “My Blue Heaven” Display of five container grown plants. Exhibitor to furnish Staging. Maximum of 24” display. Height unlimited. Each container grown plant must be in a separate container. Must list each specimen by botanical name. Class 59 Any other collection 1st place & Collectors Showcase Award-Holly Bacon ( Tillandsias), 2nd place Hazel Mitchell-Gorman. Section K “The Charm of You” – Displays of cut specimens are to be in containers furnished by exhibitor. Must exhibit five different varieties. Maximum of 24” in a display. Height unlimited. Must list each specimen by botanical name. Class 59- Caladiums – 1st place – Janis Leake, 2nd – Melinda Akins, 3rd place – Delma Murray. Class 60 – 1st place -Kathy Davenport. Class 62 Any other collection- 1st place & Award of Horticulture Excellence & Collectors Showcase Award- Teresa Shannon ( Conifers) 2nd place -Holly Bacon(Herbs). Section L “Gotta be This or That”. Collection of cut specimens to be staged in separate clear containers furnished by the committee. Must exhibit 5 different varieties. Must list each specimen by botanical name. Class 64 – Coleus- 1st place – Kathy Davenport, 2nd place – Holly Bacon. Class 66 – Any other Collection 3rd place Janis Leake. Section M “Ya Little Squirts” Collection of 5 container grown plants. Each container grown plant must be in a separate container. Must list each specimen by botanical name. Class 70 Any other collection – 1st place – Kathy Davenport (Begonia’s) Section N “Little Green Apples” Tree or Shrub cut specimen (flowering or non-flowering) Exhibit must be no longer than 30” and have several nodes. Minimum length should be 18”. Class 72 Boxus Boxwood – 1st place Teresa Shannon. Class 74 – Evergreen braches with cones 1st place Della Peterson. Class 75 Illex berried – 1st place Hazel Mitchell-Gorman. Class 77 – Magnolia grand flora – 1st place Teresa Shannon, 2nd place – Holly Bacon. Class 78 Nandina N. domestica nonberried – 4th place -Della Peterson. Class 79- Nandina N. domestica with berries 1st place Hazel Mitchell-Gorman, 2nd place — Della Peterson. Class 80 – Pinus Pine – 1st place – Teresa Shannon, 2nd place – Della Peterson. Class 81 – Any other specimen worthy of exhibit. 1st place & Arboreal Awards- Teresa Shannon, 2nd place – Holly Bacon, 3rd place – Hazel Mitchell-Gorman, 4th place – Teresa Shannon. Section O – “Yes Sir , That’s My Baby” Flowering Trees and Shrubs cut specimens. Exhibit must be no longer that 30” and have several nodes. Minimum length 18” Class 82 – Abelia – 2nd place Della Peterson, 3rd place Teresa Shannon, 4th place Sherry Dodd. The overall Sweepstakes Award went to Teresa Shannon.
