Recognizing our first responders
Recognizing our first responders
When many of us are running away from a catastrophe, our first responders are running towards it.
This week I was reminded once again about the selflessness of our first responders as I co-hosted a lunch at the Civic Center with more than 100 of our police, fire, state troopers, and emergency responders.
The bravery that our first responder displays every day is immeasurable, particularly with all the recent national tension. It is important that we respect these wonderful community servants and cooperate with them. They are the first to show up minutes after someone calls 911.
The public doesn’t see the vast majority of the work of first responders. There are calls late at night to put out a fire or resuscitate the victim of a heart attack.
They show patience long after others would have walked away.
Their families have also shown their own dedication, knowing their loved ones are putting their lives on the line and working long after their shift ends.
First responders should be commended and thanked by us for your efforts. You don’t have to donate large sums to show you care.
Your thanks could be a simple as providing a homecooked meal. Day to day life as a police officer, firefighter or paramedic is not always on a regular schedule and home-cooked meals can become a luxury.
I would encourage you to swing by our local fire station and get to know the men and women who sacrifice their safety. A simple thank you will have a tremendous impact.
In visiting your local police station you might find out about upcoming fundraisers or opportunities to volunteer. In talking with first responders, you just might find out that it is a career path for you. Our communities always have a need for those with a passion to help others.
We know when first responders put themselves in harm’s way it is not because that is what they do, but because of whom they are. I thank each and every one of you who serve our community in this way.
