Devastating first set sets tone for WM
GCT ruins home opener for Lady Blue Devils
WM School District The West Memphis Lady Devils were rolling along in Set 1 on Thursday at home against Greene County Tech, leading 2017. Momentum for the rest of the day was about to be seized.
Or not.
Greene County Tech rallied to score the next eight points to take a 25-20 win in the set. It set the stage for the Lady Eagles' threeset sweep. The visitors rolled to wins in the next two sets 25-13 and 25-13.
'We needed a big play, a big hit (in that first set) and we didn't get it down the stretch,' explained West Memphis head coach Erin Neeley. '(Tech) won all the big points down the stretch.'
The Lady Devils bolted to the early lead thanks to some solid defense and powerful serves.
'We played very good defense,' Neeley added.
'We picked up balls that we haven't picked up all season. So, some good things happened.'
Lady Devil senior Rileigh Smith led her team in digs with 7 while Victoria Templeton and Cameran Aaron had 4 each.
Madison King was tops in blocks with 3 while K.K.
Kelley had 1.
Smith was also the team leader in kills with 6. Eva Pouncey and Aaron shared the honors in assists with 6 apiece while Templeton led in serving with 3 aces.
