The Little Rock Nine: Pioneers in Equality
The Little Rock Nine: Pioneers in Equality
In 1957, a group of nine black students (Ernest Green, Elizabeth Eckford, Jefferson Thomas, Terrence Roberts, Carlotta Walls LaNier, Minnijean Brown, Gloria Ray Karlmark, Thelma Mothershed, and Melba Pattillo Beals) enrolled in Little Rock Central High School. The students were initially prevented from entering the racially-segregated school by Orval Faubus, the Governor of Arkansas. They then attended after the intervention of President Dwight D. Eisenhower who brought in the National Guard, paving the way for integration throughout the state.
