Bulldogs set for Regional Playoff
Earle boys, girls headed to Rector for postseason play
ralphhardin@gmail.com The Lady Bulldogs of Earle continued their winning ways in the 2A Region 6 District tournament last week, dispatching East Poinsett County 64-24 and Lee County 65-51.
The wins not only kept the Bulldogs winning streak (not counting a forfeit loss on Jan. 31) going to 12 straight, but also gave the Earle girls the top seed in this week’s Class 2A Regional Playoff.
The Lady Bulldogs (20-3, 10-1 in the 2A North) will be headed to Rector this evening at 7 p.m., for a first-round match-up with Sloan-Hendrix, (19-15, 5-7 in the 2A North). The Lady Bulldogs are the No. 1 seed from 2A Region 6 and the Lady Greyhounds are the No. 4 seed out of Region 3 in the 2A Conference.
The winner of tonight’s game will face the winner of the Riverside versus Clarendon first-round match-up in the semifinals on Friday at 7 p.m.
The Earle boys team stumbled at an inopportune time, losing to Marked Tree in the finals of the 2A Region 6 District tournament on Friday. The Bulldogs survived a close semifinal against Clarendon, winning 61-60 on Thursday, but the Indians, who split with Earle in the two teams’ home-andhome in the regular season, had the Bulldogs’ number this time around, hanging a double-digit “L” on Earle by a score of 57-47.
The loss put the Bulldogs settling for the second seed in the Class 2A Regional Playoff, and set Earle for a date with Buffalo Island Central tomorrow afternoon at 5:30 p.m. in Rector.
Earle (17-10, 11-2 in the 2A North) is the No. 2 seed out of 2A Region 6, while Buffalo Island Central (1311, 7-7 in 2A Conference North play) is the No. 3 team from Region 3.
The winner of tomorrow afternoon’s game between the Bulldogs and the Mustangs will face the winner of the match-up between top seed out of Region 3, host team Hector and conference rivals East Poinsett County on Friday afternoon at 5:30 p.m. The top four teams from the boys and girls Regional playoffs will qualify for the Class 2 A State Tournament, which will be held in Carlisle Feb. 26 through March 2.
