Area Alumnae Chapter helps raise awareness for diabetes

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. teams with Walgreens to spread infor-mation about risks, prevention

West Memphis Area Alumnae Chapter Journalist In observance of Diabetes Awareness, West Memphis Area Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated shared preventive information with the community at Walgreens Pharmacy. Each year on March 27th, American Diabetes Association holds Alert Day to encourage people to learn more about diabetes.

Chapter members distributed literature and administered the Diabetes Risk Test. The test was free and anonymous, and only took minutes to complete.

Statistics show that one in three Americans are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes, a serious disease that can lead to complications such as kidney disease, blindness, and amputations. Diabetes Alert Day is the Sorority’s one-day 'wake up call' to let the American public know about the seriousness of type 2 diabetes, especially when left undiagnosed and untreated.

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated will continue to partner with its Project 13 organization, American Diabetes Association, to address the rising number of health issues that impact our community.

Delta understands there is not a cure yet for diabetes, but living a healthy lifestyle can reduce the impact on person’s lifestyle. What you do every day can make a difference. Continue to eat a healthy diet, exercise regularly, and take your medications properly.
