Jonesboro MacArthur wins thriller against West
Blue Imps almost erase 14- 0 halftime deficit
WM School District West Junior High fought it hard down to the end, but fell just short Thursday night at Friendship Field, losing to Jonesboro MacArthur 14-8.
MacArthur's Holden Welch scored two first-half touchdowns and the Blue Imp offense got going a little late.
Special teams gaffes led to MacArthur points in the second quarter and Welch scored on runs of 21 and 2 yards for a 14-0 Cyclone lead at halftime.
West, however, got rolling on offense in the third quarter as quarterback Owens McConnell engineered a lengthy drive that resulted in a 3-yard touchdown by running back Davion Eason with five seconds remaining in the third quarter.
Eason also ran for the twopoint conversion to make it 14-8.
West got a final shot at either a tie or the game-winning score when the Blue Imp defense held MacArthur inside their 10-yard line.
On fourth down, MacArthur coaches elected to kick a 23yard field goal that would have virtually sealed the win for the visitors. However, the kick was short, hitting the cross bar and caroming back into the West end zone.
The Blue Imps made one last valiant effort with McConnell connecting on short strikes near midfield, but the hosts ran out of time.
