Just wondering why West Memphis and Marion football scores or film is not shown on TV5… Thinking about entertainment venues or rodeo arenas would be considered compared to bridges built over the railroad tracks that would give emergency vehicles a faster rescue for people that a few minutes might save lives or property. I was at a crossing recently and an ambulance had to wait about 7 minutes to get under the crossing. I believe lives mean more than entertainment.

[ Editor’s Note: I don’t know about Channel 5.

You’d have to ask them. As to your second query, funds for “ entertainment venues or rodeo arenas” come from the Advertising & Promotion revenues ( and associated grant programs), while funds for “ bridges built over the railroad tracks” come from an entirely different local, state and federal funding source]

*** MHS homecoming court sporting the red dresses are a pretty group of gals. Didn’t the bozos in charge know that racial diversity is why there are 12 girls selected from 3 grades? It has been the practice at both Marion and West Memphis since the 70s. Someone sure dropped the ball this year and no one in administration caught it? Thank God it wasn’t the other way around or there would be cries of racism from all over. Although lovely, this group does not accurately reflect the student population at MHS. [ Editor’s Note: The last time I paid attention to such things ( like when I was in high school), the practice at Marion was for each class to vote on the Homecoming court for their grade, with the understanding that at least one “ maid” from each grade would be a minority student ( or in simpler terms, it was always “ two white, one black” for each grade). Maybe we’ve reached a point in our society where it’s no longer important to “ regulate” such things?]

*** Recently, the Evening Times published a picture of the Marion High School Homecoming Court. There were 6 black and 1 white members of the court. It it had been 6 white and 1 black, would some people have considered it racial discrimination?

[ Editor’s Note: Apparently, some folks conside the way it actually did turn out to be racial discrimination, so I’d imagine so]

*** Congrats to the lovely ladies but something is terribly wrong here. [ Editor’s Note: Terribly wrong? I mean, I knew when I saw the photo of a white Homecoming Queen and an all- black court I’d get texts, but “ terribly wrong” might be over stating things a bit. Being a grown person with plenty of other things to worry about, I can’t get all that interested in who a bunch of high school students elect to their Homecoming court. Here’s an idea: Let’s leave the high school students alone to enjoy their Homecoming festivities. I’m perfectly willing to accept that it’s at least possible that just maybe students didn’t vote for a “ race,” and that they voted for a “ person.” Are you?]

*** Who elects the West Memphis and Marion homecoming courts. [ Editor’s Note: This seems kind of out of the blue.

Why do you ask?]

*** Most people in Marion could really care less about how their council person is elected. The majority of them, do not even vote. Quite frankly, we should do away with ward voting and just elect x number of officials as it would be no different than what we have now. The Marion system is still controlled by the good old boys and as soon as someone is elected that disagrees with them, they start the process of have them voted out. I have lived here many years and it’s interesting to see candidates carry the vote in their ward but lose the over all vote. [ Editor’s Note: Apparently, what most people in Marion really care about is how the Homecoming court is elected]
