‘ E- waste’ collections up in September
news@theeveningtimes.com Electronic waste recycling caught on in a big way in West Memphis during September. Public Works Administrative Assistant Rhonda Standridge reported a record haul.
Citizens crammed two trailers full of electronic recyclables in the parking lot at City Hall. Computers, monitors, printers, accessories and cables, office equipment, TVs, even phones, mobile devices and old answering machines are on the list for acceptable e-recycling. Home appliances, like microwaves, toasters, vacuum cleaners, hair driers and curling irons were taken in. Stereos, digital cameras and DJ equipment can dropped off.
“We had the biggest e-waste recycling month ever,” said Standridge. “There were two full trailers. The first trailer was so full we actually had to off load some of it to haul it.”
Two other trailers stand ready at City Hall too. The East Arkansas Planning and Development helps provides the trailers for West Memphis residents to reduce, reuse and recycle. Items for those trailers include cans, boxes, cartons plastic bottles and jugs, junk mail, magazines, books, and foil trays.
A hefty 14,850 pounds of these items were collected and processed at a recycling center. The city bore the expenses of collecting 250 illegally dumped tires and taking them away for recycling.
