Helena school owns second half
Sports Editor West Memphis Christian fell to 1-5 overall and 1-1 in the district with a 21-7 loss to Lee Academy on the road last Friday night.
The Black Knights lost to Lee for the first time since 2011 in the contest.
“Both teams played really, really hard,” said West Memphis Christian head coach Darrow Anderson on Sunday. “We just haven’t been able to find a way to win the close ballgames this year, and this was another one.”
Lee Academy was playing for the memory of one of their teammates who passed away last week.
“They put it out there to win, we made one big mistake on defense and they scored off of it, but other than that, we played pretty well,” Anderson explained. The game was tied 7-7 at halftime, and Lee led 14-7 entering the fourth quarter.
“In the second half, they lined up in the wishbone and two-tight and were able to run it down on us,” said the coach. “A number of times we got them into third-and-longs and they’d roll out and we’d give up a pass or a run that we’d normally stop, and you gotta give Lee a lot of credit there, because they did what they needed to do to win.”
It’s the third time in as many weeks that West Memphis Christian has been close at halftime, only to lose the game.
West Memphis Christian will host Marshall Academy on Friday night in another key district game.
