www.agfc.com LITTLE ROCK – The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission will be celebrating National Hunting and Fishing day along with the rest of the country, Sept. 24. Many special programs will be available at AGFC nature centers across the state.

National Hunting and Fishing Day was established in 1972 to celebrate and recognize hunters and anglers for their immense contributions to fish and wildlife conservation.

In the United States, conservation efforts are largely funded through excise taxes collected from manufacturers of hunting, angling and boating merchandise. These funds are divided among states based on landmass and relative populations of hunters and anglers. Additionally, hunting and fishing license fees collected at the state level contribute to conservation work in that state.

According to the U.S.

Fish and Wildlife Service, Arkansas’s hunters and anglers spend more than $1.5 billion each year while pursuing their outdoor passions in The Natural State. This supports more than 25,000 jobs in Arkansas. More than $42.5 million is directed at conservation efforts annually through license sales and federal excise taxes.

“Hunters and anglers are our original partners in conservation,” said AGFC Director Jeff Crow. “It was hunters and anglers who had the vision to voluntarily place taxes and fees on themselves to ensure the future of the woods and waters we all enjoy.

Through this American system, where users pay for the entire public’s benefit, we have seen the greatest story of conservation in the history of the world.”
