Here’s what everyone is talking about this week:

What seems to be the problem with the Evening Times delivery at Horseshoe Lake? Tuesday, 8-16, there was no delivery and I called the office and was assured that I would get my Wednesday paper which I did after 11 p.m. on Wednesday night. Got a paper on Thursday but did not get one on Friday. My next door neighbor got hers on Friday but there were several other people who did not get one on Friday. [ Editor’s Note: I’m trying to picture a scenario in which one of our delivery drivers would be out on the job tossing papers at 11 p. m. I actually got a text from one of our carriers ( why this wasn’t conveyed to me in person, I couldn’t tell you) explaining that their route includes “ Marion, the back side of Marion, Proctor, Horseshoe Lake, and Hughes,” and they recently lost their brother, and in the course of dealing with that, there were some issues. I don’t really have intimate knowledge of how our routes are coordinated, so while it seems like someone else from that department might have been able to step in and pick up the slack, I don’t know how much of that situation was communicated within the circulation department. Hopefully, everything is back on track now]

*** The recent A Minority View by Walter Williams, “The End of Civility” could not have been said more perfectly. We who are older definitely need to expose the lies our children are told but most turn a deaf ear to anything we try to share due to their “know it all” or “it won’t happen to me” attitude. [ Editor’s Note: Just from studying contemporary American history ( say, post- World War II moving forward) I see two emerging trends that shouldn’t necessarily be intertwined but seem to be. One is American society becoming more open to the idea that we’re not all the same and ( sometimes begrudgingly) accepting that being tolerant of lifestyles and views different from our own is OK.

The other is a willingness to let someone else take responsibility for taking action to make things better. Each generation, it seems to get worse. The more we want everyone to be free and happy, the less we’re willing to work for that happiness. I’m sure I was a hard- headed when I was 20 as today’s 20somethings, so maybe it’ll get better as they emerge as our community leaders]

*** Re: out-of-towners getting married in Crittenden County. My grandmother (who would have been 89 this year) always said that this was the only county in the area that doesn’t require a blood test to get a license. Why any county would require a blood test is beyond me, but it is probably an old requirement to test for consumption, [ Editor’s Note: It may seem like an antiquated practice, or at the very least an invasion of personal privacy, but premarital blood tests were once fairly common, used to check for venereal disease or other communicable illnesses, such as rubella. Later, the tests would also disclose the presence of genetic disorders such as sickle- cell anemia or Tay-Sachs disease. And while it’s been pretty much done away with, Mississippi still requires it, along with Montana ( for women only, if you can believe that) and the District of Columbia. Arkansas, to my knowledge has never required a blood test, at least on the state level, but counties may have at one time had the ability to decide what, if any, additional requirements to have in place]

*** I like what Mr. Elbert Guillory has to say about “It was Republicans in congress who authored the 13th, 14th 15th amendments giving former slaves citizenship, voting rights and due process of laws” I also like Trump standing up for the black community as well as all nationalities to work hard to solve problems and not continue to blame everything on gun control and finally do something the current administration hasn’t done but only fuels race issues without looking at both sides. Former pastor and leader for all people; now in heaven and Republican; the great Christ like human; Dr. Martin Luther King would be upset badly and disturbed by the last 8 years of lies and deception that the Democratic Party had successfully fooled millions of our great multitudes that were expecting better lives and hope over a measly vote for false promises. AND THEY still are trying to repeat the same control that has politicized our tries rights as Americans trying to change for the tax payers and poor people that mean more than too big of government control and attempts to change our beliefs and constitution as we know it. Only way to change this is to VOTE and run for offices ourselves! No more long term for life politicians!

[ Editor’s Note: the political ideology of both parties has shifted over the years. Democrats, you’ll recall, were once so conservative that an extreme right- wing branch of the party, in both 1948 and 1968, ran their own presidential candidate because the regular party nominee wasn’t extreme enough for their tastes.

In fact, it was during this period that the parties began to shift, thanks in large part to the Kennedy and Johnson administrations picking up the banner of civil rights. Nixon’s staunchly conservative politics cemented the deal. Another good indicator is Strom Thurmond, a segregationist “ Dixiecrat” who was a U. S. Senator from 1954 to 2003. Thurmond switched to the Republican party in 1964]
