Marion golf beats Brookland
The sun was shining, the birds were singing, and the birdies were dropping. In what promised to be Marion golf team’s toughest week of competition, the Patriots got off on the right foot.
On Monday afternoon, the Brookland Bearcats came to town for a 9-hole match. Led by junior Conner Catt, who medaled with a 40, the Patriots defeated Brookland 163 to 228.
In 6A high school golf, a team’s score is compiled by counting the four lowest scores from the 5 starters. To win, a team must have a strong performance from their 3 through 5 positions. That’s just what the Patriots had on Monday.
Junior Jacob Kohl’s, junior Drew Hutcheson’s and sophomore Gavin Truitt’s matching scores of 41 propelled Marion to the large margin of victory. On the girls’ side, Brookland had only one golfer, so Marion started sophomore Sydney Massengale, who fired a 55 to win by a dozen strokes. Her round was punctuated by dominance on the par 3’s, where she shot minus one on the tough holes of the Monster at Marion.
The Patriots turn right around for a match on Tuesday when Jonesboro and Palestine try their hand on Marion’s home course. Next Monday, Aug. 29, everyone’s favorite rivals meet on the links when AWM hosts the Patriots.
