Details about a new Family Dollar store at Jackson and Avalon were presented to the West Memphis Design Review Committee.
Renderings of the finished building were viewed by commissioners and proposed signs were discussed during the June meeting.
The building will look different than the other Family Dollars stores in the city.
The chain has a store in a strip center next to Sears.
The new store will look completely different from the free standing Family Dollar store at 2113 E.
Broadway. While the Broadway store has metal siding, block and earth tones were planned to cover the store on Avalon. The material board presented to commissioners for the $900,000 construction project lined up with a lot of red bricks, and trademark Family Dollar red and dark sand trim. Commissioners approved the color scheme.
City Planner Paul Luker talked about landscaping plans and sign details for the store on the busy corner. A solid row of holly skirt the north side of the property and Luker indicated
the effort and were the irrigation has a
back-flow preventer.
“They have a good landscaping plan with a good number of trees,” reported Luker. “It exceeds our landscaping requirements.”
The company went large with the signs too. The drawing for the facade sign covered 20 percent of the front wall. Luker wanted the signboard scaled back.
Plans showed a lit banner style sign with the company logo spanning over the entry way along with a pole sign set on the lot.
“The single pole sign is 49 square feet,” said Luker. “I think we need to limit them to the normal size.
They are asking for a 40foot variance on size. The height of the pole at 22 feet is in conformity (to standard requirements). The leading edge is set back 15 feet from the driveway.”
Commissioners then voted to move the project forward with Luker working on the sign details discussed.
