Redbirds split doubleheader with Colorado Springs

Memphis loses Game One 10- 9; Redbirds have best offensive performance in Game Two, win 16- 4

Memphis Redbirds COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado – The Memphis Redbirds (34-37) combined to get 29 hits in two games against Colorado Springs (32-37) Tuesday afternoon but were unable to win both games.

In game one, the Redbirds had 12 hits and had a three-run lead going into the seventh inning but failed to close out Colorado Springs and lost 10-9 in nine innings. In game two, Memphis scored 16 runs in the first four innings of the game to win 16-4. Sixteen runs are the most Memphis has scored in a single game all year and they also tied a team record, getting 17 hits in a single game.

Jeremy Hazelbaker, Charlie Tilson, Jacob Wilson and Breyvic Valera were the only four Redbirds to play in both games of the doubleheader. Hazelbaker combined to go 6-for-8 at the plate and had 3 RBI. As a Redbird, Hazelbaker has now hit safely eight times in 13 atbats. Tilson hit in the lead off spot both games and went 5-for-9 with 2 RBI and hit his second home run of the season in game two. Wilson went hitless in the first game but bounced back to go 2-for-3 and had 2 RBI in game two against the Sky Sox.

Randal Grichuk and Jose Martinez only played in game one but both had a home run and multi-hit game. Grichuk went 2-for-3 with three RBI while Martinez went 2-for-4 and drove in two runs.

Grichuk is batting .333 and has 7 RBI in four games with Memphis this season.

In game two, Carlos Peguero and David Washington combined to go 6-for-8 at the dish and had 6 RBI. Peguero is now one of three Redbirds to get four hits in a singlegame this season. Dean Anna went 2-for-4 in game two and now has a pair of hits in the last two games he has played in.

Game one starter, Deck McGuire, was unable to pick up his sixth-straight win tonight. He threw five innings and gave up six runs on 10 hits while fanning six and issued just one walk. Juan Gonzalez threw two perfect innings in game two to pick up his third win of the season.

The Redbirds and Sky Sox play one more doubleheader tomorrow before the series finale on Friday, and Memphis returns to AutoZone Park Saturday through next Tuesday.
