The First Community Bank West Memphis Blue Devils summer baseball season is winding down along with the month of June.
The Blue Devils lost to White Station 10-6 before rebounding to beat Lee Academy of Marianna, Arkansas 11-1 and Memphis Home School Association 11-1 last night. Dryer County topped West Memphis 8-5 in the nightcap.
West Memphis is now 4-9 ahead of its summer finale on Friday at 2 p.m. against Union City, Tennessee.
Morgan Williams took the loss for the Blue Devils against White Station, while Austin Sudbury went 1-4 with a single, Curtis Washington went 1-4 with a triple, Lance Burch was 1-3 with a single as was Hayden Spears.
West Memphis trailed 4-0 into the fifth inning, but responded with six runs before dropping the game.
The Blue Devils got on the left side of the ledger against Lee Academy as Spears notched the win on the hill, supported by 1-3 nights from Mason Kearney and Lance Burch and 1-3 performances from John-David Kemp and Trey Brossett.
Spears struck eight batters out and walked just two.
The Memphis Home School Association game was the opener of the Covington High School Tournament in Covington, Tennessee.
Tyler Thorn was the winning pitcher for West Memphis, while Sudbury was 2-4 with an inside-thepark home run and a single, while Burch was 3-4, Washington and Spears each going 1-3 and Brossett going 3-4 with a triple.
Against Dryer County, Michael Troxler was the losing pitcher while Sudbury was 1-3, Washington was 1-3, Kearney was 1-1, while Owens McConnell posted a 2-2 day.
“We played well, but the heat got to us, having to play back-to-back games,” says West Memphis head coach Gary Cordell. “The kids believe that they can play with anybody now.”
