Here’s what everyone is talking about this week:
Leave the West Memphis foxes alone. Let them live in the field & the bayou and be a happy fox family. [ Editor’s Note: One day… one day, someone is going to snap a picture of one of these local foxes. Maybe we should have a contest?]
*** You don’t have to print this, but I just wanted to say I enjoy the Today in History part of the paper. Thanks for printing it. [ Editor’s Note: While I don’t have to print it, history fans know that we have the right to due to Freedom of the Press and the First Amendment. Yay history!!!]
*** I’m so disappointed with the Times. We have an 80 year old man missing. Mr. Lee Henry Jackson has been missing since last Friday. Why haven’t his picture been a daily post in the TIMES!!!? [ Editor’s Note: I’m sure by now, you’re well aware of Mr. Jackson’s passing. I had a follow- up planned for the day he was found, but obviously there was no point by then.
Prayers and condolences for Mr. Jackson’s family]
*** I’m from Nashville and recently visited relatives in Marion. I was amazed that one block from the elementary school that almost no one heeds the stop sign at Cherry & Gordon. I watched from 3-7 one evening there could have been 15 tickets written there including one to a deputy. Seems like it would be a good place for the police to work. They were told about it a few weeks ago. They know about it but still haven’t done anything. [ Editor’s Note: Is that one of those new 3- way stops? Because, those things pop up out of nowhere. There are two in Wind Song now that I only saw because I had to slow down and wait for a car to back out. So, be careful out there. As the great philosopher Jim Morrison once said, ‘ Keep your eyes on the road, your hands upon the wheel.’]
*** Why are my tax dollars paying for the care of animals from the Helena West Helena shelter? Expensive vetting, IV fluids [ Editor’s Note: While I don’t know the specifics of your complaint, I do know the West Memphis Animal Shelter works closely with the Helena- West Helena based Humane Society of the Delta, a 501( c) 3certified nonprofit organization that advocates for the humane treatment of animals throughout the region. They work with various animal shelters to help unwanted, displaced or abandoned dogs and cats find homes. They also sponsor spay/ neuter clinics, conduct adoption transports, attend community events, and collaborate with local agencies to help control the pet population. They operate on a donations- only budget. Is this the operation you were referring to, or is there something else?]
*** This message is to mayor fogleman and the powers to be with the city of Marion. As a long time citizen and taxpayer of this city I am appalled and sickened at a recent social media video of street superintendent Gordon Floyd. If this kind of behavior from a city representative is to be allowed then maybe we should voice our opinion at election time. [ Editor’s Note: You and I must run in completely different “ social media circles,” because I have no idea what this is about. What, was there some illicit paving being done?
Just a note, though… street superintendent isn’t an elected office, so you’ll have to go pretty high up the food chain to effect change there at the polls]
*** Why was a murderer out on work detail? Asking for trouble? [ Editor’s Note: That’s actually a pretty good question. Personally, I don’t think this guy was very committed to the whole escape deal. I mean, maybe I’ve seen “ Cool Hand Luke” too many times or something, but this guy, who’s in prison for 60 years for murder, gets a chance to escape, and he only gets a few miles? In three days? I’m glad they caught the guy and all, but in that situation, you’ve got to go all in. I’m talking, running — a lot of running — like across the creek to get the dogs off your trail, and stealing a change of clothes off the clothesline, and grabbing some nice lady’s pie cooling off on the window sill ( clearly my jailbreaking experience comes from 1970s movies, but still). After three days in the woods with mosquitoes, chiggers and the heat, he probably regretted leaving the prison altogether]
