4th annual citywide Cleanup Blitz brings a crowd

Keep West Memphis Beautiful turned out 70 volunteers for their annual Great West Memphis Cleanup Blitz, a Saturday morning clean sweep of the city.

A corresponding 70 bags of litter were collected along with debris scooped up at designated work sites by the city grapple truck.

A variety of groups lent hands to the cause. School groups, churches, clubs, fraternities and sororities as well as individual volunteers raked, mowed and sacked litter. Groups included Bethel AME Church, Real Deal Ryderz Motorcycle Club, Robert’s Critter Getters and the Day Care Kids, and Wonder Junior High. Greeks cleaned streets, too, with Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, Kappa Alpha Psi, Omega Psi Phi, and Zeta Phi Beta represented.

Keep West Memphis Beautiful Coordinator Lorraine Robinson kicked off the morning event by telling participants that the effort was part of an Arkansas and nation wide Keep America Beautiful focus.

“You all here today are part of the solution and not part of the problem,” said Robinson.

Mrs. Leferny worked to keep her street along Sula Lane clean. Rufus Glandess with city sanitation filled two grapple trucks with debris from designated Keep West Memphis Beautiful sites.

Volunteers served at ten sites throughout the city.

Flowers were planted at Wonder Elementary. The school district got some more attention as one crew swept across the lot west of city hall and moved down Avalon to the School Administration building. South 17th from Broadway to Polk was policed for litter. Lawn mowing at the Wonder City Boys and Girls Club finished early and crews turned attention to Jackson Avenue from 17th to Avalon. The North Perkins and North 14th Street area received attention as well as Richardson to North 14th Street.
