Two- sport Marion senior will continue golf career
Sports Editor Following an impressive senior season at Marion High School, Cameron Kohl will continue his athletic career at Blue Mountain College as a golfer.
Kohl, an all-conference selection in golf and football, signed with the Blue Mountain, Mississippi school on Tuesday in a ceremony at Marion High School.
“I’m feeling pretty great about the opportunity to continue to play golf,” said the outgoing Kohl after his ceremony. “Coach told me that they’re like the No. 8 programs in all of NAIA.
I’m looking forward to helping the team as a freshman already.”
In addition to his all-conference chops on the links, Kohl also qualified as an all-state selection at the 2015 Class 6A state golf tournament.
“Him just being willing to do a lot of stuff on his own was impressive to me,” said Anthony Nail, Marion’s head golf coach. “He was my No. 2 golfer during most of the year, but he was also a starting guard on the football team. So, just his willingness to go to a few two- or threehour football practices and then take the time out to golf on his own, past the time that anyone else was out there, and still compete at a high level, that’s pretty impressive.”
While Kohl’s football career lasted just one season, he greatly exceeded expectations while protecting Patriot passers.
“I don’t think Coach (Jed) Davis really expected much out of me,” Kohl said. “He told me he was excited to have me, but he didn’t think I would start for us.”
Once Kohl got began offseason conditioning with football, he found that it helped him in each of his sports.
“I think the weight room really boosted my golf game. That really helped with the physical side of golf too,” Kohl said. “In football, we had a great season. I loved being part of a team like that, and Coach Davis was such a positive influence on me.”
