Footage goes ‘ viral’ on social media

In the Internet Age, there are some very interesting things caught on video.

With social media apps and video hosting sites, footage can spread like a virus — thus the phrase “going viral.”

For many, a “viral” video is a good thing, spreading a message of humanity’s better virtues, bringing a smile to faces around the world or just seeing how “Internet Famous” someone can get.

But, then there’s the downside to Internet fame.

AWest Memphis woman is facing charges after video of a vicious beating went “viral” on social media earlier this week.

The video, which has been making the rounds online in local circles and has now spread all throughout Facebook and YouTube and the like, purports to show one woman beating another woman right next to a baby in diapers on the same bed. West Memphis Police have arrested Shatavara Smith, a 25-year-old black female, of West Memphis, in the incident. Smith now faces several charges, including Aggravated Assault, Aggravated Residential Burglary and Second Degree Battery.

The mother who was attacked had injuries to her eyes, nose and lips, but nothing was severe. The child, said to be 11 months old, was not hurt, but police said Smith put the child in substantial risk of bodily hard. No charges of child endangerment have been filed at this time.

The assault happened at a home on North 25th Street, and according to reports, it stemmed from an incident several weeks ago at a nightclub.
