Black Knights peaking at the right time
Sports Editor West Memphis Christian beat Lee Academy-Marianna on Tuesday night 15-8, in a slugfest that was significant for a few reasons.
For starters, it clinched West Memphis Christian’s (8-6 overall, 3-1 district) spot in the North State Tournament for the first time in 20 years.
It also set the Black Knights up for a significant game against Marshall Academy at home on Monday afternoon. If the Black Knights were to defeat the Patriots by two runs or more, they would clinch a regular-season district title, and a No. 1 seed in the North State tournament.
“The kids are starting to play their best baseball right now,” said West Memphis Christian head coach Gary Cordell of his team’s recent four-game winning streak.
Cole Wann notched the win for West Memphis Christian, while Parker Benson entered for the save.
Wann and Benson also sparked their team at the plate, going 1-4 and 3-4, respectively.
Jacob Hatcher was 3-3 against Lee-Marianna, Hunter Weathers went 2-4, Manning Shidler was 1-4, Matthew Baker posted a 24 day, as did Charlie Farr.
Evin Cooper was 2-3 and Brady Holloway went 1-5.
West Memphis Christian’s last loss was a 2-1 decision in Holly Springs, Mississippi to Marshall Academy three weeks ago and the Patriots have yet to lose in the district.
The first pitch for the game against Marshall Academy is scheduled for 4 p.m., followed by the junior varsity contest.
