Career Day at Weaver Elementary

West Memphis students get face time with community professionals

West Memphis School District

Career Day was as spectacular and busy as usual at Weaver Elementary.

Twenty speakers were on hand at the school’s event, which was coordinated by guidance counselor Kelly Moore.

“I felt the need to do it bigger and better this year because we weren’t able to have it last year because of the weather,” said Moore.

“We hope we give the kids a good variety of job ideas and descriptions and possibilities for themselves later in life.”

On hand for the event were First Community Bank president David Pike, Murphy Smith of Fidelity National Bank, the West Memphis Fire and Police Departments, martial arts instructor Katherine Bailey, the West Memphis Ambulance Service, Lt. James Stevens from the Arkansas Highway Police, Sgt. Ezell Ratliff of the U.S. Army Reserve, Acme Pest Management’s Cindy Cunningham, Evan Lucas from the Arkansas Department of Corrections, Crittenden County Extension Agent and 4H Agent Cynthia Rorie, hairdresser Sade Evans, Ryan Smith from the Archaeological State Park, Jack Myers, director of education at Delta Cultural Center, West Memphis Parks and Recreation director Lorenzo Parker, biologist Jermaine Conley and A& P mechanic Jason Walls.

“This is one day our kids really look forward to most during the school year,” Moore added. “They’re very respectful of the professionals coming in and they are very attentive. We appreciate the people who’ve donated to us for this day.”

The list of gift bag fillers for the speakers included Barbara Owens from the West Memphis Mayor’s Office, Pike from First Community Bank, Smith from Fidelity and Josh Roper from Southland Gaming and Racing.
