A salute to Earle s Mrs. Jessie Mae Maples
Mrs. Maples, a mother of 7, just relaxes these days on her porch greeting passersby. One of her many contributions to the community was the 1971 March in Earle to get the dump moved from the Black neighborhoods.
Mrs. Maples and others marched through the town in peaceful protest. Mrs.
Maples was shot on the way back through town under the oveipass. In that ordeal, she lost a kidney, spleen and part of her pancreas.
She says God has been good to her these last 45 years. All she can say is “Thank youm Jesus.”
